The Department of Economics of West Bengal State University started its academic journey from the very inception of the university (2008-09), imparting quality teaching and research in Economics to Post-graduate students (10 students out of 25 approved intake capacity initially) with six permanent faculties (out of seven sanctioned posts: Professor – 1, Associate Professor – 2, Assistant Professor – 4) under the guidance of renowned Economists, Prof. P. N. Roy, Prof. Asis Banerjee and Prof. Asim Dasgupta as Guest faculty of the Department. Prof. Jyotish Prakash Basu, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of this university and senior-most faculty member of the department, served as the former Head of the Department of Economics. The department offers M. Sc., M. Phil., and Ph. D. degree in Economics as post-graduate and post-masters courses. Our vision is To impart quality higher education in Economics in order to attain recognition in both national and international levels and to provide quality teaching–learning and research in contemporary economic theory and applications to the students through proper initiatives and sustenance activities so as to increase their employability and to equip with modern tools and techniques to serve different Government and Non-government institutes and business enterprises.
