6 MONTH CERTIFICATE COURSE IN ENGLISH COMMUNICATION

The Department of English was established in March 2009 with 7 full-time sanctioned posts along with a temporary teaching assistant to help in the establishing of a new department. Since then the department has grown in strength, both qualitatively and quantitatively. While framing the syllabi we decided to strike a balance between canonical areas and emerging concerns to inculcate a high level of subjective knowledge in the students. We have placed strong emphasis on literary theory and are proud to have been able to incorporate considerable thrust on English language and English language teaching. Our teaching methodology comprises traditional lecture method along with tutorials, interactive classes, group discussions, students’ presentations, & workshops. To equip the students for further research we have included term papers and dissertations at the post graduate level. Envisioning the department as a centre of active intellectual and research exercise, we have untiringly organized special talks, seminars, conferences, symposiums and workshops at the national and international levels. Our MA syllabus has a strong focus on language, and we propose to organise regular workshops on Teaching English as a Second Language with school teachers and professionals engaged in teaching English to speakers of other languages. We propose to establish a ‘Language Lab’ to facilitate the teaching/learning of English language and offer a course on ‘Communicative English’ to enable the young students to use English language effectively for practical purposes in everyday life.

1.The Department hosted Fulbright-Nehru Teaching and Research Scholar Dr. Richard Sharp from the Catholic University of America, Washington from August, 2013 to May, 2014
2. Our course includes South Asian Literature as a major component and a Third Theatre Drama Workshop conducted by members of Badal Sircar’s group has been held for students as part of course for the last four years.
3. English Language Teaching, with a syllabus that approximates a professional course, forms a major component of our syllabus, and is one of the Optionals chosen by a majority of thestudents.
4. Emerging areas such as Gender Studies, Dalit Studies, Folklore Studies, Neo-Victorian Studies, and Adaptation Studies are a part of our syllabus.
5. The Department of English has established under it the Centre for Studies in Gender, Culture & Media (CSGCM) from December 2019. The focus of the Centre will be multi-disciplinary exploring the rich exchanges between literature, and culture, gender and media studies. It aims to host several academic events to boost the vibrant research environment of the department, and to contribute to the intellectual growth of the university.
