The Department of Political Science and IQAC, West Bengal State University organized a Two-Day international Webinar titled ‘Reading Democracy: Global Perspectives, Contentions and Debates‘ in collaboration with Department of Political Science, SNDT Women’s University, Mumbai; Loreto College, Kolkata (an IQAC initiative) and Asia in Global Affairs, Kolkata on August 27 & 28, 2020 from 6.00 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. (IST).
All participating institutes are bound by MOUs to share a common commitment to encourage independent thinking and reasoned debate which form the essence of intellectual growth and enrichment. This Webinar was the first of a series of joint academic and research endeavours that the institutes have envisaged to allow the spirit of their collaboration to flourish.
The two-day International Webinar was graced by a panel of eminent speakers and erudite scholars from the discipline like Emeritus Prof. James Manor, University of London; Prof. Christophe Jaffrelot, CERI-Sciences Po/CNRS & Kings India Institute, London; Prof. David Schultz, Hamline University, USA; Prof. Samir Kumar Das, University of Calcutta; Prof. Nivedita Menon, JNU, New Delhi; Dr. Rakhee Bhattacharya, JNU, New Delhi; Dr. Ajay Godavarthy, JNU, New Delhi, and Dr. Manisha Madhava, SNDT Women’s University, Mumbai. The Inaugural Session was presided over by Prof. Basab Chaudhuri, Honb’le Vice Chancellor, West Bengal State University; Prof. Shashikala Wanjari, Honb’le Vice Chancellor, SNDT Women’s University, Mumbai; Sr. Dr. Christine Coutinho, Principal, Loreto College, Kolkata and Ms. Priya Singh, Assistant Director, Asia in Global Affairs, Kolkata.
More than 400 participants from all walks of academia attended the Webinar digitally. An extremely vibrant and academically enriching discussion over the two-days made our Two-Day International Webinar on ‘Reading Democracy: Global Perspectives, Contentions and Debates’ a grand success.
