Department of Mathematics:

The prime objective of the Department is not only to promote mathematics learning but also to acquaint bright young minds with the recent developments of mathematical tools that have emerged as a result of the growing need for the investigation of various aspects of science and technology as well as multi socio-economic problems. Another goal is to evolve into an institution of excellence where the students as well as the faculty get actively involved in the process of scientific invention. With this motive, the Department of Mathematics, started its functioning, immediately after the inception of West Bengal State University, in the year 2008.

The Department in its M.Sc. program follows a semester system (four semesters each of six months duration) CBCS Syllabus and a grading system of marks. In the final semester, each student has to do a project.

As an outcome of sincere efforts by the faculty, many students right from the very first batch of this department, have qualified for NET (i.e. Joint CSIR-UGC JRF Examination), GATE, etc. Some of them have already been awarded Ph.D. degrees, several others are working as research fellows in our Department and other reputed Institutes; also a good number of students of our Department have got jobs as Assistant professors, School teachers, and in other fields.

Research Activities:

The Department of Mathematics started its journey in the year 2008 and within a short span of time, a good number of research papers have been published in different reputed National/ International journals by the faculty. The faculty members are also actively engaged in communicating research activities in the form of attending/ delivering talks/ presenting papers at various National/ International conferences in India and abroad. Several research scholars under the guidance of the faculty members of the Department have been awarded their Ph.D. degrees, some others either have submitted their Ph.D. thesis or are on the verge of completing their research works, and the remaining are working as research fellows.

The main thrust of research activities are in the following fields: i) Topology, ii) Functional Analysis, iii) Fixed Point Theory, iv) Measure & Integration v) Dynamical System, vi) Theoretical Plasma Physics, vii) Nonlinear waves in Plasma, viii) Complex Analysis, ix) Quantum Mechanics, x) Fuzzy Set Theory, xi) Mathematical Ecology, xii) Machine Learning, xiii) Cryptography, xiv) Graph Theory & Algebra, xv) Wave propagation in solids.
